Grant Denyer reveals his lowest point during harrowing opioid addiction battle: ‘I’m still so ashamed’

Grant Denyer has opened up about his rock bottom moment amid his harrowing addiction battle.

The Deal Or No Deal host, 47, has battled a highly publicised painkiller addiction in the past, after breaking his back during a freak monster truck accident in 2008.

The crash left Grant with a vertebra shattered in eleven pieces, and doctors feared he might never walk again

Speaking about the ordeal on Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren show on Friday morning, Grant candidly revealed the moment he reached the lowest depths of his addiction battle.

‘There’s one picture I always try and remember, because you know, you’ve got to monitor your own behaviour, right?’ he began.

‘In the addiction for some reason that night, I wanted scotch,’ he continued.

‘I was living in an apartment in the CBD. I left in the middle of night just in my undies, walking around, no clothes on, just undies, for scotch, in a delirium, and then I got lost.’

Grant added that his wife of 14 years, Chezzi, was looking for him for three hours, only to find him in a fire escape, sleeping next to a pile of human excrement.

‘I could barely walk right, like freshly broken back, and I’d got lost in the building, and she found me three hours later in the fire escape, asleep on the ground, just curled up in the corner, just stuck and lost next to someone else’s poo,’ Grant admitted.

‘Someone had taken a dump in in the fire escape, and here I am asleep on the ground, in my undies, lost.

‘I just try and remember that if I ever think I’m slipping.’

Elsewhere in the candid chat, the former Sunrise star also admitted to still feeling shame for the way his addiction had affected Chezzi.

‘I’m still so ashamed and embarrassed about the things that I said and did to my wife in that period of pain addiction,’ he said.

‘It was humiliating and destructive.’

Grant added that after his shock accident, he had no idea that his pain medication would lead him to ‘hell’.

‘I was struggling in the recovery of the broken back, and I had an addiction to the pain medication,’ he said.

‘It’s something that no one warns you about, like you go to hospital, you get an injury, they’ll treat it, they’ll send you out with a bunch of prescriptions, and no one will sit you down and go: “Hey, this could be the road to hell”. These things may happen.’

Speaking about his period of addiction on the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show podcast in 2023, he admitted that he suffered shocking hallucinations that people were breaking into his house and sexually assaulting his wife.

‘When you are under the influence of that kind of power of medication and in that much pain, when you close your eyes at night you go into your worst nightmares immediately and it is every night,’ Grant said.

‘When you wake up you can’t differentiate what was real and what wasn’t.’
